We are pleased to invite you to the online lecture From Elite Reversal Agents to Red Lighting Bolts: Mothering and Politics in Art by Zuzana Štefková Ph.D.
It is scheduled for 10th of May, Monday, at 5 pm.
The lecture sets to explore the terrain at the intersection of art, situated mothering, and activism. Based on examples of contemporary art dealing with various aspects of mothering and the refusal of reproduction, the presentation examines artistic critical responses to politics, institutions, symbolic resistance to oppressive systems, and the potential of activist maternal art. We will discuss activist and ethical implications of these artistic gestures and the regimes of their presentation and interaction with their audience.
Zuzana Štefková (1977) has earned a Ph.D. in Art History at the Charles University, Prague with her dissertation on Gender Aspects of Embodiment in Czech Contemporary Art. She is an assistant professor at the Charles University and teaches courses at the Academy of Art, Architecture, and Design. She works as a freelance curator and art critic publishing articles in Czech and European art magazines. Her recent international exhibitions include I am Not Your Object! (2021) and HateFree (2016-18). Together with Tamara Moyzes she curated the exhibitions Czechpoint (2006-7), dealing with political art, and Middle East Europe (2011-12) presenting art reflecting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Since 2011, she curates exhibitions for Artwall Gallery (www.artwallgallery.cz). Her publications include among others book Svědectví: Ženským hlasem (Testimonies: In a Female Voice). She is a member of activist group Mothers Artlovers and co-founder of c2c circle of curators and critics.
